What the audit checks
What the ecommerce audit looks for in your online store
The audit reads the code of the page you paste in and checks what new customers and Google look for in an online store.
-
Does it matter which platform we use?
The audit recognizes the platform
WooCommerce, Shopify and Magento are recognized. The rest of the audit works whatever the store is built on.
-
Do we have the payment methods people look for?
Payment methods are looked for
The audit finds Klarna, Stripe and PayPal in the code. Customers expect to be able to pay the way they are used to.
-
Why isn't our price shown in Google?
Product data Google can read
The audit looks for Product and Offer with price and currency in the structured data. Without them it is harder for Google to show your price.
-
Do we have our terms and privacy in place?
Links to terms and privacy are checked
The audit looks for terms of sale, cancellation and returns information, a privacy policy and a solution for cookie consent.
-
Why should anyone trust us with their order?
Signs that the store is real
A visible phone number and email, reviews from Trustpilot and stars in the structured data. It is some of the first things new customers check.
-
Does the customer see what it costs in the end?
Shipping and tax are mentioned on the page
The audit checks whether shipping, delivery and tax are stated on the page, and whether the store has OpenGraph tags for sharing on social media.
Questions and answers
Questions about auditing your online store
What the audit sees, what it doesn't see, and what to do with the answer.
Does the ecommerce audit work as a WooCommerce audit?
Largely, yes. The audit recognizes WooCommerce in the code and checks the same things as for other stores: payment, product data, terms, contact details and trust. Shopify and Magento are recognized too.
It doesn't log in to WordPress, so it can't see versions, plugins, security or how the checkout works. That takes a review in the admin panel.
Should I audit the home page or a product page?
Preferably both. The home page shows best whether terms, contact details and payment methods are visible, since the links are often at the bottom of the page.
Product data is usually only on the product pages. If you only audit the home page, the audit may report that Product and Offer are missing even though your product pages have them. Audit a product page too before you start fixing things.
What terms and information does an online store need?
It depends on the countries you sell to, so check the rules there. In Norway and the EU, a store needs terms of sale that are easy to find before purchase, information about the 14-day right to cancel with a withdrawal form, details about who is selling, including company registration number and contact details, and a privacy policy.
The requirements come from consumer protection, e-commerce and privacy law. The audit only looks for the links, not whether the content is correct. If you are unsure, ask a lawyer or your local consumer authority.
Can the audit see everything that is wrong with my store?
No. The audit reads the code of the page you test. It can't see the checkout, the shipping options, the stock or anything behind a login, and it doesn't measure speed.
If you want to know how fast the store is, also run the website grader. It pulls Core Web Vitals from Google, and slow loading is common in stores with many product images.
What is the difference between the ecommerce audit and the SEO audit?
The SEO audit looks at what applies to every website: titles, headings, alt text, links and technical SEO.
The ecommerce audit looks at what is particular to online sales: payment methods, product data with price and currency, terms of sale, right to cancel and signs that the store can be trusted. Use the SEO audit for visibility in Google, and the ecommerce audit to see whether the store is ready for customers.
Can I audit a competitor's online store?
Yes. The audit works on any online store that is open to everyone. It can be useful to see which payment methods competitors offer, whether they show reviews and whether they have product data Google can use.
The result for an address is cached for 24 hours, so if you test the same store several times the same day, you get the same answer.
What do I do if the audit finds a lot missing?
Start with what you can fix yourself: links to terms of sale and privacy at the bottom of the page, a visible phone number and email, and shipping and tax stated clearly.
